Indigenous groups and government supporters took to the streets of the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on Tuesday to celebrate what the United Socialist Party of Venezuela called a ‘victory’ of Ecuadorian protesters over International Monetary Fund policies.
“Today the indigenous peoples are here, mobilising in support of the indigenous people of Ecuador, which has been run over and riddled by the government of Lenin [Moreno],” said Wilson Tisoy, the leader of the Inga indigenous people.
Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno agreed on Sunday to repeal an austerity package, which was announced in an attempt to meet financial goals set by the IMF, following 11 days of demonstrations led by indigenous peoples.
