Uruguay: Thousands Join Silence March to Demand Justice for Disappeared

Thousands of people took to the streets of Montevideo on Monday to mark the 24th Silence March in a bid to seek justice for those who disappeared under the civic-military dictatorship of the 1970s and 1980s.

The heavy rain did not stop the protesters from marching, and they were seen carrying banners and pictures of their missing friends and family.

“It seems like Uruguayan justice system is deaf to the claim of the families, which is a fair claim, it’s a claim for the truth, a claim for human dignity and a claim for human rights,” said Olga Martinez, the partner of a missing person.

The Silence March is organised by the Mothers and Relatives of Detained and Missing Uruguayans, and has been taking place since 1996
