Unrest Hits Refugee Camp on Chios Island After Woman’s Death

A fire hit Vial refugee camp on the Greek island of Chios on Saturday night. It happened after the death of an Iraqi woman sparked a protest among refugees.

The 47-year old Iraqi refugee died in the camp after being admitted to a hospital with fever. She was cleared of having the coronavirus, but many of the camp’s inhabitants believed the woman died of COVID-19.

Footage shows the fire brigade and police entering the camp.

The blaze damaged a canteen, warehouse tents and many housing containers, leaving homeless many of the overcrowded camp’s 5,000 residents.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by early Sunday morning. Two Afghans and an Iraqi were reportedly arrested in relation to the unrest.

The refugee camps in Greece are currently under quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic.
