UK: Diplomatic Immunity for Suspect Sacoolas “Absurd” Says Harry Dunn’s Mother

The mother of Harry Dunn, a 19-year-old who was fatally injured after he was allegedly struck by Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a US intelligence officer, said that US claims that the suspect has diplomatic immunity are “absolutely absurd.”

“It is absolutely absurd that they could say that the spouses of supposed diplomats or the intelligence officers as Mr. Sacoolas was, have greater immunity than the actual employees themselves. It is just crazy, it doesn’t make any sense whatsoever,” said Dunn’s mother, Charlotte Charles, over a Skype interview from South Northamptonshire, on Wednesday.

Charles also said she did not feel supported by UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Dominic Raab throughout the case.

“The first meeting that we had with him was one that we requested, it was not offered to us or to extended to us,” she stated, before adding “he wasn’t very pleasant to us at all.”

The 19-year-old’s mother got emotional when mentioning that what keeps her going is “the promise” she made to her son the night he passed away.

“I promised him that night that we would get justice. I had no idea how hard that was going to be but you make a promise to your children and you do not break it,” she said.

Sacoolas is accused of driving the car that collided with Harry Dunn’s motorbike, last summer. Following the teen’s death, a judicial review was launched into Sacoolas’ claim to diplomatic immunity, which would imply she is exempt from prosecution.
