University students in Barcelona established a protest camp at the city’s University Square, on Wednesday, to demand freedom for political prisoners, to protest police violence, and to call for a referendum on Catalan independence.
“We are here because we want the freedom of political prisoners, they are unfairly jailed and we also want an auto-determination referendum so Catalonian people can decide whether we can be independent or not” Marta Gallego a university student said.
Students were seen setting up their camping site, writing banners and gather in groups around the camping area.
“Repression cannot continue against us. If they remove us today, tomorrow we will be back and so on until they let us exercise a right to express ourselves.” Didac Lopez, a university student said.
Media reports say that the student protest group has adopted the name “generation of October 14” in reference to the day Spain’s Supreme Court sent nine Catalan independence leaders to prison for up to 13 years.
