Protesters Call for Rent and Mortgage Cancellation During California Lockdown

Dozens of cars paraded in front of the California State Building in San Francisco on Friday, to demand that Governor Gavin Newsom cancel rent and mortgage payments for residents during the coronavirus lockdown.

People maintained the social distancing protocol by protesting from their cars while honking car horns and playing music. Many also gathered with their bicycles or carried banners.

“Even though we have a moratorium on payment of rent right now, six months after this ends tenants will have to pay all of that rent and people are not going to be able to pay it,” said a protester, expressing his concern over a possible eviction crisis due to the economic impact of coronavirus lockdowns.

The protest was part of May Day events and came days after the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US has surpassed one million with over 65,000 people having died with the disease, according to data gathered by the Johns Hopkins University.
