Protesters Call for Release of Prisoners After Coronavirus Outbreak at San Quentin

Friends and family members of inmates at the San Quentin State Prison, north of San Francisco, picketed outside the facility, on Sunday, after it was revealed that there had been a coronavirus outbreak behind its walls.

The protesters marched towards the facility, carrying banners and placards against the California Governor Gavin Newsom, calling for mass releases and accusing the authorities of a lack of care for the prisoners, as the number of COVID-19 cases at the prison exceeded 8,000, according to an organiser of the protest.

“The total is over 8,000 – the exact number of total cases, which changes minute by minute in the state of California, within CDCR, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Total confirmed cases 8,149. We have had a total of 1,136 new cases in the last 14 days. A total of 47 deaths, 19 of those 47 deaths have occurred at San Quentin. Out of 36 institutions, 19 of 47 deaths have occurred at San Quentin,” organiser Courtney Morris said.

The United State of America has had over 4.6 million cases of coronavirus since the start of the outbreak, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Over 154,000 people are said to have died with the virus in the US.
