Palestinian Muezzin With Down Syndrome Continues Calls to Prayer at Ramadan During COVID Lockdown

Amjad Al-Karaki is the muezzin of the Abo Al-Reish mosque in Hebron who is unique due to the fact he has Down syndrome. Amjad has been continuing the rite despite the social distancing measures and lockdown instituted in the State of Palestine. As Friday marks the start of Ramadan, Amjad invited Ruptly along with him to observe the responsibilities of a muezzin.

“Due to the coronavirus, the mosques were closed but I should call in all the times including noon, afternoon, before evening and evening prayers,” explained Amjad. Before the pandemic forced the closure of the mosques, Amjad used to open the mosque daily for people to pray as well as calling the prayers and keeping the mosque clean.

“Since he was a child and even until this moment, he loved the mosques. Amjad is 40 years old and he loves mosques and especially the Al-Ibrahimi Mosque,” said Amjad’s father Talib.

“Amjad was greatly affected by not being able to pray in the mosque after the decision of the prevention of prayers in mosques,” added Talib. The State of Palestine has recorded 484 confirmed cases of COVID-19 which have led to a total of four related deaths since the outbreak began, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
