Lebanon: Dozens in Beirut Slam US Ambassador After Hezbollah Criticisms

Dozens of Hezbollah supporters rallied in Beirut on Sunday after US Ambassador Dorothy Shea accused Hezbollah of damaging Lebanese economy and democracy.

Dozens of protesters on mopeds were seen waving Hezbollah flags and banners as they gathered at a busy road in a southern neighbourhood of Beirut. The demonstrators were seen blocking a road as they chanted and honked moped horns. The Lebanese military could also be seen arriving at the scene as the demonstrators dispersed.

The protesters were denouncing the US Ambassador to Lebanon’s comments, made during a televised interview on Friday, where she accused Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah of endangering the country’s stability and hindering the economic crisis in Lebanon.

Shea has reportedly been summoned by Lebanon’s Foreign Minister over the comments.

Several demonstrations against allegations of government corruption broke out last year across the country as Lebanon was facing its worst economic crisis in decades. The COVID-19 crisis has added further pressure on the struggling Lebanese economy, prompting a new wave of protests despite social distancing restrictions.
