Israeli forces have attacked Palestinian prisoners in their cells at the notorious Shikma Prison in Ashkelon, violently preventing prisoners from eating and destroying personal possessions.
Soldiers from the Metzada special forces unit entered and attacked prisoners in their cells while eating lunch around noon on Wednesday, destroying the food and preventing the detainees from eating. The Metzada unit went on to violently search rooms and destroy belongings.
The Palestinian Detainees’ Committee reports this is the second attack by occupation forces at the prison in the past 24 hours and accused the Israeli Prison Service of deliberate provocations in order to attempt to force a confrontation. Such a confrontation would give the Service a pretext to impose further harsh sanctions against Palestinians held at the prison including solitary confinement and denying them the rights to see their families and lawyers.
The prison, which holds around 50 Palestinians, has been the scene of tensions before, with similar raids in 2018 leading to the imposition of abusive rules including restrictions on prisoners accessing the toilet and the closure of the prison’s cafeteria.
