Iran has designated the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) as a terrorist organisation and the United States itself as a state sponsor of terror, the move coming after the U.S. decision to declare Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a foreign terrorist organization yesterday.
CENTCOM has been at the centre of the so-called “war on terror” with an Area of Responsibility that includes the Middle East and most notably Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. While based in Florida, the organisation has established a forward headquarters in Qatar.
Exhibiting just a small snippet of U.S. deployment around the globe, CENTCOM forces have been deployed and utilised in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan with supporting roles in the UAE, Oman, Yemen, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other nations.
Yesterday, United States President Donald Trump declared the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a “foreign terrorist organization” in a move that many suggest will further destabilise the middle-east and potentially act as a pretext for future military action against the country.
The move by Trump was welcomed by Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu who said the declaration “serves the interests of our countries and of countries in the region” and that Trump was “answering another of my important requests.” The move comes after the U.S. recognition of both the annexation of the Golan Heights and the apartheid state’s claims on Jereasulum as the capital of Israel.
In 2014, Noam Chomsky criticised the U.S. list and the motivations behind it.
“Why should we even take the terrorist list seriously? What’s the terrorist list? The executive branch of the government simply determines you’re a terrorist. I put you on the list. No review. No judicial review. No defense. It’s just an executive act of an authoritarian state. Why should the state have the right to determine unilaterally who’s a terrorist? Do they have that right? No, they don’t.”Noam Chomsky, 2014
The Revolutionary Guard has previously been designated a “terrorist organisation” by Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
