Hundreds March in Greece Condemning Refugee Eviction

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Athens on Friday to decry recent evictions of refugees and migrants from refugee camps in Greece.

The group of protesters were seen marching in central Athens waving, Black Lives Matter, anti-racism and pro-refugee banners before arriving at the Hellenic parliament, where police in full riot gear were guarding the scene.

“We’re here. To support the refugee families, to support the demand by migrants to have papers. They work here, they have the right to be legal,” said one protester.

Tens of thousands of refugees, who were previously given asylum in the country, are facing eviction from accommodation facilities where they are currently staying. The Greek authorities plan to reinstate the refugees living in apartments and refugee centres funded by the UN with asylum seekers on Aegean islands aiming to decongest the flow of refugees in mainland Greece.

Protesters demanded a solution or travel documents so they could travel to other EU countries in seek of refuge.
