Firefighters continued extinguishing fires in the exclusion zone near the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear power station. Footage filmed on Thursday shows smoke billowing from the forest amid the fires.
According to the Ukrainian State Emergency Situations Service (SES), over 300 firefighters backed by 83 units equipment – including two planes and three helicopters – were involved in the operation.
The SES denied any increase in radiation levels in Kiev or the city of Chernobyl.
However, the head of Ukraine’s State Ecological Inspection Service, Yegor Firsov, wrote on Facebook last week that the radiation level has spiked 16 times above normal in the bushfire area.
The fires broke out on April 4 on an area of 20 hectares and reached 35 hectares within three days.
