Beirut Streets Devastated in Aftermath of Explosions

Widespread destruction could be seen on the streets of Beirut on Wednesday, after multiple explosions at the port rocked the city on the previous day.

Even though the causes of the massive explosions, which flattened Beirut’s port on Tuesday afternoon, remain unclear, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab said 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material, had been stored at a port warehouse without preventive measures.

Diab called for an investigation into the cause of the blast, with results expected to be released in the next five days.

According to the Lebanese health ministry, the number of reported casualties from the explosion currently stands at 78 people, while approximately 4,000 wounded.
