Mexico: Government Auctions Luxury Cars to Help Poor

The Mexican government will auction a Lamborghini and other luxury car brands – all seized assets from criminal gangs – as part of a so-called ‘Robin Hood’ programme to help the poor.

A selection of vehicles was put on display for the general public and potential buyers on Tuesday.

This included a 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago, a Mustang convertible, Porsches, Corvettes, Mercedes-Benzes, Mini-Coopers and some vintage Volkswagen Beetles.

The auction will take place on Sunday and proceeds from its sales will go to two municipalities in the southern state of Oaxaca.

The sale will be managed by the newly created Institute to Return Stolen Goods to the People. The idea is part of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s anti-corruption drive.
