A group of volunteers were filmed on Wednesday sterilising Baghdad’s Tahrir Square with chemicals. The area, as well as being a popular local hotspot, has also been the congregation area for anti-government protesters in recent months.
The volunteers, calling themselves “Relief of the Nation,” under the supervision of a number of doctors, decided to sterilise the area out of their own accord and their own pockets. Local nurse and volunteer, Ali Zakaria Salim confirmed this, saying: “the staff acquired the sprays, tools, and sterilisation materials used in the work on our personal account.”
The footage shows the volunteers using products they had imported from Italy and going through the square, tent by tent, sterilising the area.
“After the coronavirus arrived, we did not want people to be hurt by the mass gathering. We volunteered in this campaign to cleanse all the existing tents. The materials we use have been approved for use by several doctors,” explained Marwan Taleb, a local medical student and volunteer.
