Iraq: Protesters Set Up Makeshift Memorial for Demonstrators Killed in Crackdown

Residents of Najaf gathered at a makeshift memorial on Tuesday to mourn protesters who were killed in recent clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

“It is completely quiet here and the situation as well. It’s a sad atmosphere around here because of the fallen martyrs. Even there are no clashes at the moment, as the people understand the situation,” said one resident.

Over 400 people were killed and tens of thousands injured in the crackdown on anti-government protests across Iraq in the last two months.

On Sunday, parliament approved the resignation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi who was forced to step down under the pressure from demonstrators.
