Colombia: Violence Erupts As Anti-Govt Protests Return to Bogota

Violent clashes between police and anti-government protesters marked the first large rally of the new year in Bogota on Tuesday.

Riot police deployed tear gas and fired non-lethal weaponry as protesters in turn through rocks and petrol bombs.

According to Bogota Mayor Claudia Lopez, the majority of the demonstrations in the Colombian capital were peaceful although eight protesters were injured; similar protests also reportedly took place in Medellin, Cali, and other cities.

Colombia has been going through a wave of protests and anti-government mobilisations since November 21. Among the protesters’ demands are the withdrawal of pension and labour reforms as well as the dismantling of the Colombian National Police’s riot control unit, the Mobile Anti-Disturbances Squadron (ESMAD).
