Chile: Water Cannons Deployed to Disperse Mass Protests in Santiago

Chilean police deployed water cannons and launched tear gas at mass protests in the capital city of Santiago on Saturday.

Numerous police vehicles can be seen on the streets of Santiago, firing water cannons at protesters who in turned hurled stones and other objects back.

Earlier in the day, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera called for his cabinet to resign, and his intention to remove the state of emergency if circumstances permitted it, in an attempt to calm the protests.

The demonstrations were triggered by a metro fare hike which was later withdrawn. But the protests continued with demands to address the rising cost of living, pension reform and alleged abuse of power by police.
