Thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets of Santiago on Friday, to demand social reform in Chile.
Protesters gathered in central Plaza Italia – called ‘Plaza de la Dignidad’ by protesters – where they faced off with riot police, who tried to disperse them with tear gas and water cannons.
Chile has been rocked by nation-wide protests since October, which were triggered by a now-withdrawn increase in subway fares. Social discontent has been fuelled by frustration with President Sebastian Pinera’s policies and growing inequality.
