Thousands of protesters flooded central Santiago on Thursday, for another round of demonstrations against the government of Chilean President Sebastian Pinera.
Tensions erupted when police forces deployed water cannons against demonstrators, with many hiding behind makeshift shields and barriers. Streets were covered in smoke with debris set on fire.
The massive anti-government demonstrations in Chile were initially triggered by a metro fare hike which was later withdrawn. But protests continued with demands to address the rising cost of living, pension reform and alleged abuse of power by police.
