Clashes erupted between anti-government demonstrators and the police in Valparaiso, during the latest demonstration that took place on Tuesday and extended into Wednesday morning.
Footage shows protesters marching with a banner aimed at Vina Del Mar Mayor Virginia Reginato, which read “Regginato is not a nun. She is a thief and an oppressor,” before scuffles broke out with the police. Carabineros, the Chilean national police force, were seen firing tear gas at the demonstrators.
Chile has been rocked by nation-wide protests since October, which were triggered by the now withdrawn increase in subway fares. Social discontent has been fuelled by frustration with President Sebastian Pinera’s policies and growing inequality.
