Australia: Police Raid National Broadcaster's Sydney HQ Over Afghanistan Papers

Australian police raided the headquarters of the state-owned Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney on Wednesday morning, in the second day of searches targeting journalists in 24 hours.

Footage shows Australian federal police entering the offices of Australia’s national broadcaster, as with warrants naming three journalists who worked on ABC’s 2017 investigative series, “The Afghan Files” which centred on allegations of unlawful killings by the Australian forces in Afghanistan.

The warrants permit the police to access the notes, emails and other files of the journalists named, who included ABC News Director Gaven Morris as well as two other reporters.

The operation took place a day after police searched the house of News Corp journalist Annika Smethurst, as part of an investigation into an alleged leak of national security information.

Police said that Wednesday’s operation was related to “allegations of publishing classified material, contrary to provisions of the Crimes Act 1914,” but ABC Managing Director David Anderson warned about “concerns over freedom of the press and proper public scrutiny of national security and defence matters.”
