Argentina: It’s Her Right, but ‘She Promised Not to Be a Candidate' – Morales on Anez's Candidacy

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales held a campaign rally at one of the farms in the city of Pilar on Saturday, a few days after he announced his candidacy in the upcoming May 3 Bolivian presidential election.

When questioned about Interim President of Bolivia Jeanine Anez, who earlier said she would run for president as well, Morales said: “It is her right, although she promised not to be a candidate, as well as Camacho [presidential candidate Luis Fernando Camacho] too.”

He continued: “We have been informed that there are several alliances of the right and we respect them. It is a democratic right. We hope that as a de facto government you can be a president in the transparent and healthy elections.”

Morales fled Bolivia to Mexico in November under pressure from the armed forces following unrest over alleged irregularities in the election. After a few weeks in Mexico, he was granted asylum in Argentina.

He is now leading his Movement to Socialism party (MAS) party in the campaign for Bolivia’s May 3, 2020 elections.
