Argentina: Hundreds of Evas and Juans Celebrate Peronist President Fernandez

Hundreds of people dressed as late First Lady of Argentina Evita and President Juan Peron rallied in Buenos Aires’ Plaza de Mayo on Monday, as new president Alberto Fernandez prepares to be sworn in as the country’s new leader.

People flooded the historic promenade wearing colourful costumes, waiting to celebrate the new Peronist president.

The caravan of Evas was preceded by a young woman with long black braids riding a horse that toured the square, portraying Juana Azurduy, the Bolivian heroine who fought for her country’s independence from the Spanish crown.

On Tuesday, following Fernandez’s assumption, Plaza de Mayo will host a public party filled with dances and music from noon until night.

Fernandez was elected as Argentina’s next president in the country’s general election in October.
