Climate change protesters including Youth for Climate Movement and Extinction Rebellion occupied BlackRock’s office building in Paris on Monday.
Police could be seen being shut out as activists barricaded themselves in the building and blocked the entrances with signs and ladders in an attempt to start discussions on climate change. Extinction Rebellion logos and anti-capitalist slogans were sprayed on walls and windows.
One activist, Emilia, said members of the movements went “upstairs with BlackRock employers to explain to them our anti-capitalist demands.” She acknowledged “the fight is difficult.”
Youth for Climate Movement member Clement expressed his concern for “BlackRock in the pension reform and it’s the first financier of Total. We’re facing a real enemy of nature.”
BlackRock is one of the world’s biggest investment funds holds $7tn (€6.41tn) in assets. It has been facing a backlash in France where the government is currently attempting to reform the pension system, sparking unrest and one of the longest strikes in French history.
