Hospitals in the port city of Hodeidah have been overwhelmed by patients showing symptoms of dengue, malaria and chikungunya, as footage filmed on Wednesday shows.
Althawra Hospital’s vice president Dr Ahad Moja called the epidemic ‘catastrophic’.
‘The number of cases approximately is 3,166, including 1,123 dengue fever cases, 676 cases of malaria, and there are 156 joint cases of malaria and dengue in addition to 993 cases of chikungunya fever.’
The outbreak is thought to have been caused by the increasing numbers of mosquitos due to worsening health and hygiene conditions. At least 78 children are believed to have died from the disease.
