US Senator and 2020 Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unveiled a new bill that would invest up to $180 billion (163 billion euros) to make public housing green within a decade. They spoke to supporters who gathered in front of the Capitol in Washington DC on Thursday.
“The planet Earth is in severe danger and we are facing a global crisis. We must listen in this country and around the world to the scientists. And the Green New Deal that the congresswoman and I are fighting for is the only programme out there that does that,” said Sanders.
The legislation called the Green New Deal for Public Housing aims to end carbon emissions from nearly one million units of public housing in the US.
“What this legislation is about and what I am so proud to say what this legislation is about is that it adopts the tenants of the Green New Deal which is first to centre frontline communities, those that are impacted most by the climate crisis,” said US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
