Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday hit back at US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for demanding that Iran behave like “a normal nation” as a pre-requisite for possible nuclear talks. The remarks came in a meeting with university professors and doctors in Tehran.
“The other side that left the negotiating table and breached a treaty should return to normal state. Until then, we do not have a choice but resistance,” said the Iranian President responding to Washington’s offer to hold talks with Tehran without pre-conditions.
“The day when the enemy realises it has been doing the wrong thing and backs up, then there will be many ways [for negotiations],” added Rouhani.
Tensions have been rising between the US and Iran in recent weeks, since Tehran announced it would partially withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), on May 8, one year after the United States withdrew and re-imposed sanctions on Iran.
