Video: Russia Calls for Full Withdrawal of Foreign Troops from Afghanistan

Subtitles are available.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for the full withdraw of foreign troops from Afghanistan during an event dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Russian-Afghan diplomatic relation in Moscow on Tuesday.

“Russia is convinced that there is no military solution for the conflict in Afghanistan. The only possible way is to achieve peace by political and diplomatic means,” Lavrov said.

Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and Taliban deputy leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar attended the event, both sides confirmed they are ready to continue the peace process domestically and internationally.

“We seek balance in our relations based on friendship and cooperation with all countries especially with neighbours and regional countries,” Karzai said, thanking Russia for its role in the region.

Russian-Afghan relations were established in 1919 after Soviet Russia became the first country to recognise Afghanistan as an independent state.
