Extinction Rebellion activists have met with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and Shadow Environment Secretary Sue Hayman, with Labour declaring a commitment to engaging with the group.
Admitting that previous Labour policies had failed to meet the issues and urgency surrounding climate change, McDonnell has pledged to ensure that Extinction Rebellion now has the opportunity to present its case to the whole shadow cabinet and promised that the group will be able to make presentations to the Shadow Environment Committee and the Shadow Treasury team.
“We’re glad that John McDonnell listened to the urgency of our demands but we need our politicians to be more ambitious. Our children’s future is on the line. The International Rebellion will continue until politicians prove they are willing to act on all three of our demands.”Extinction Rebellion
Extinction Rebellion has raised new public awareness of the issues surrounding climate change after two weeks of disruption and protests in London and will tomorrow meet with Environment Secretary Michael Gove.
Following the meeting, activists will join forces with Momentum for a protest in Parliament Square. The rally will coincide with a vote on Britain declaring a national climate emergency, the vote having been forced by Labour. The two groups will be joined by youth climate strikers to call on the Conservative government to back the emergency call.
