Anonymous Target National Crime Agency as War for Julian Assange Intensifies, Assange Wins EU Journalism Award

The Anonymous hacking collective has targeted the British National Crime Agency as the cyberwar over Julian Assange intensifies, the collective vowing the target U.S. and Swedish targets in the next phase of the protest.

After launching the first wave of attacks against Ecuadorian interests this past weekend, Anonymous have now targeted British websites including the National Crime Agency and Supreme Court, taking down both websites for a period of time with denial of service attacks.

The move comes following attacks this past weekend which left key Ecuadorian websites offline amidst an onslaught of over 40 million overall attacks. Websites affected by Anonymous include the Foreign Ministry, the Central Bank of Ecuador and the office of Lenin Moreno, the Ecuadorian President who has been accused of corruption.

Speaking with The Gateway Pundit, one member of the Anonymous collective said that the group has the potential to do significant damage to the targeted nations.

“Our attacks are just like the riots at the streets with [the] police, but it’s more powerful because we can damage the government more. We can make them lose a lot of money… Trump is a troll. He can’t hold the US. Nothing more for him… UK is like the US. We have [already sent] message[s] in [the] UK… Free Assange or the chaos is coming.”

The attacks in defence of Assange come as the former Wikileaks boss was awarded the 2019 GUE/NGL Award for Journalists, Whistleblowers & Defenders of the Right to Information in conjunction with Nestlé whistleblower Dr. Yasmine Motarjemi and Football Leaks’ Rui Pinto.

Established to honour assassinated Maltese journalist Daphne Galizia, the award is sponsored by European parlimentarians and given in recognition of “individuals or groups who have been intimidated and/or persecuted for uncovering the truth and exposing it to the public”.

Collecting the award at the European Parliament on his behalf of Assange was Nobel Peace Prize winner and peace activist Mairead Maguire, Maguire having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for co-founding the Community for Peace People, an organisation dedicated toward peace in Northern Ireland.

“Through WikiLeaks Julian Assange’s vision of transparency has revolutionalised journalism. His imprisonment and threatened extradition to the United States has drawn a sharp line in the sand. You are either encouraging the crackdown on media freedom or you are standing with Julian Assange.”

Kristinn Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks

Sharing the award, Dr. Yasmine Motarjemi is a former food safety manager of Nestlé and whistleblower on the same company’s food safety lapses. Rui Pinto meanwhile is currently detained in Portugal due to an arrest warrant and is believed to be one of the sources behind Football Leaks, an online platform exposing cases of corruption and fraud in football.
