UK: Supermarkets Give Priority to Elderly People Amid Coronavirus Panic Buying

Customers were queuing outside an Iceland supermarket in London’s Brixton district on Thursday after the chain announced the ‘elderly and vulnerable people’ will be given priority amid the panic buying caused by the novel coronavirus.

The goodwill step has been followed by another British supermarket giant – Sainsbury’s.

The panic buying was caused by concerns about possible shortages of basic goods due to the movement restrictions. Shelves have been regularly emptied despite the government’s pledges that there will be no breaks in supply.
