UK Coronavirus Response ‘Way Behind Other European Countries’ Says Labour Leader Starmer

UK Parliament convened this Wednesday to discuss measures surrounding the country’s coronavirus response, with newly-appointed Labour Party opposition leader Keir Starmer challenging the government’s handling of the outbreak.

“Testing is obviously crucial, at every stage of the pandemic, but we have been very slow. We are way behind other European countries,” said Starmer.

“Something’s going wrong. And there’s a pattern emerging here. We were slow into lockdown, slow on testing, slow and protective equipment and now slow to take up these offers from British firms [to manufacture PPE],” he added.

First Secretary Dominic Raab, acting in place of incapacitated Prime Minister Boris Johnson, responded that the country has been “guided by the scientific advice.”

The secretary was also pointed out that the UK faces the same challenges as countries worldwide, who have seen similar shortages of equipment and capacity.

Other members of parliament joined via videoconference, as the country enters its fourth week of lockdown, with all non-essential businesses still closed.
