Sweden: Assange Lawyer Hopes Detention Denial Will Be 'New Start for Him'

Julian Assange’s lawyer Per E Samuelson spoke to the press in Uppsala on Monday regarding a Stockholm court’s decision to reject a request from prosecutors to detain the WikiLeaks co-founder.

Regarding the rejection, Samuelson said it was a “step in the right direction” and hoped that the decision could be “a new start for him.”

Samuelson visited Assange in late May and “could with [his] own eyes see that he was in a bad health.”

On April 11, a lawyer for one of the women involved asked for the investigation to be resumed.

The Swedish prosecutor had reopened the sexual assault case against Assange on May 13.

Prosecutors had initially dropped the investigation in 2017, because they were unable to proceed while Assange remained in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

After spending seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Assange is in prison in Britain following his arrest in April.

He was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for violating his bail conditions.
