The Gran Hotel Colon in Madrid received its first coronavirus patients on Thursday, after becoming the first hotel in the country to get outfitted with medical equipment to treat infected people.
Recovering patients will be treated in its 365 rooms, which will help hospitals to free up space to care for critically ill patients.
The Gregorio Maranon Hospital, located just 300 meters away, as well as the Infanta Leonor Hospital and La Princesa Hospital, will be some of the centres that will send their patients to the hotel facilities.
The Health Department of the Community of Madrid reported that the auditorium of the Marriot Hotel will also open its doors tomorrow as a medicalised hotel to tend to patients from the Torrejon de Ardoz University Hospital, the Principe de Asturias Hospital and the Henares University Hospital.
Spain is currently the fourth country in the world in numbers of cases of coronavirus with 17,147 and 767 deaths so far, after China, Italy and Iran.
