Spain: Assange Unaware 'There Were Hidden Microphones' in Embassy Says Lawyer

The Spanish lawyer of WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange said alleged spying by the US via a Spanish company against his client whilst he was holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London means that the trial for his extradition to the United States must be dropped since he believes this case shows “there are no safeguards of any kind in the United States.” Aitor Martinez made the comments in Madrid on Friday following court proceedings concerning the case against Undercover Global.

Speaking about the case, Martinez said Assange, who spoke via video link from the UK, “confirmed that he didn’t know at all that the cameras recorded audio, that there were hidden microphones, for example, in the PVC mounts of the fire extinguishers.”

“He confirmed that he was a totally passive subject of an illegitimate intrusion that was, eventually, coordinated by the United States,” Martinez added.

Last September Spanish authorities issued a European Investigation Order requesting to question Assange over the ongoing investigation of the Spanish security company working for the Ecuadorian embassy in London and its owner, David Morales, for allegedly sending recordings of Assange to US intelligence services.

Assange is still fighting extradition to the US as he is held in London’s high-security Belmarsh prison. Sixty doctors have reportedly expressed concerns about his health and are attempting to have him moved to a hospital.
