Protesters Rally in Bolivia Against Postponement of Presidential Elections

Dozens gathered outside the electoral court in La Paz, on Monday, to denounce the presidential elections being postponed for the second time, from September 6 to October 18, “due to the coronavirus pandemic”.

The postponing of the election is the latest in a series of authoritarian moves by the illegal government in Bolivia that overthrew the democratically elected Evo Morales in a US-backed coup last year.

Protesters rallied in rejection of the decision of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to delay the elections on the grounds of the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the protesters, Marco Antonio Mendoza, said that “people are demonstrating, taking to the streets and calling for elections now, because we are seeing the inability of this self-appointed president, who is bankrupting this country.”

The elections were originally set for May but were rescheduled to September 6, following the coronavirus-induced lockdown.
