Dozens of pro-Palestinian rights demonstrators led by a group of American Jews marched on Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s home in Washington DC early on Tuesday morning to speak out against Israel’s planned annexation of West Bank territories.
Protesters held signs reading ‘Jared Kushner enables Apartheid’ and chanted ‘End the blank check,’ a reference to the continued financial support towards Israel.
“Israel is planning to annex a lot of parts of the West Bank. This is an illegal seizure of land and is a violent and dangerous action that will only increase tensions in the region. As an American Jew, I recognise that the US government supports the Israeli military and supports Israel in various ways and provides a lot of funding. I don’t want my tax dollars going to support this violent action. So, I’m here to protest, to wake up Jared Kushner and indicate to him that American jews are not with him, we are against annexation,” stated Jews Against the Occupation representative Jessica Lupu.
President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner has been spearheading talks with Israel which are currently debating whether to support the planned annexation of the territory. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed to annex a large portion of the West Bank. Netanyahu has set a deadline to begin the process for July 1st, but it has thus far been delayed.
“The message we are sending to the United States government is that they must stop supporting the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the apartheid-like situation for Palestinians. And Kushner has been in the forefront of supporting Israel’s and Bibi Netanyahu’s policies that are so damaging to many of the people that live there,” said Non-Violence International representative Michael Beer.
