Ecuadorian police used water cannons to disperse protesters who took to the streets of Quito, on Wednesday, to demonstrate against austerity measures taken by the government.
“The unpaid doctors, the unpaid teachers, all workers. Workers that are being laid off… That’s who we’re supporting. Because we also feel the struggle that our country is going through,” said protester Juan Carlos Robalino, who gave Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno a one month deadline to solve the country’s issues, saying, “Otherwise, who knows if the lion won’t wake up stronger than it did last October.”
Last October, Ecuador was plunged into a wave of protests amid social discontent over a series of economic adjustment measures, including the elimination of fuel subsidies, in agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to obtain million-dollar loans.
