Argentinians staged a new general strike on Wednesday against the neoliberal economic policies proposed by the Government of Mauricio Macri, as images recorded early in the morning in Buenos Aires show.
Groups of strikers organized pickets and traffic blockades in different streets and access roads into the city, chanting slogans and waving banners against the policies of the current government. The public transport services were strongly affected by the strike.
This is the fifth national strike to protest against the Argentinian president, called by different social organizations and the General Confederation of Workers (CGT) union, and it is taking place simultaneously throughout the country.
Official government data registered by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) show an inflation rate of 3.4%, with a slight deceleration compared to March´s figures (4.7%). Even though, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) delivers an annual inflation rate of 55.8%, while the majority of salaries and pensions did not grow proportionally in the South American country.
