US President Donald Trump announced all travel from European countries, except for the UK, to the United States would be suspended for 30 days starting on Friday, during an address to the nation from the White House in Washington DC on Wednesday.
“After consulting with our top government health professionals, I have decided to take strong but necessary actions to protect the health and well-being of all Americans. To keep new cases from entering our shores, we will be suspended all travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days,” he said. “These restrictions will be adjusted subject to conditions on the ground. There will be exemptions for Americans that have undergone screenings.”
Trump added the restrictions would also apply to trade, cargo and “various other things” coming from Europe.
The number of reported cases in the United States more than doubled in 48 hours, with over 1,300 confirmed cases in the country and 38 deaths as of Wednesday. Worldwide, the disease has infected over 126,000 people and killed more than 4,600 as o Thursday morning.
