Secretary-General of Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah said that the responsibility lies on the Lebanese people to avoid a condition of political vacuum by calling for the formation of a new government as soon as possible, one that listens to the demands of the people, speaking during a televised address from Beirut, on Friday.
“When we previously said that we do not support the resignation of the government it was not because the government is a Hezbollah government,” Nasrallah said, adding that Hezbollah is very strong and is not worried about itself.
Nasrallah praised the Lebanese people for their ability to thwart incitement saying that “those who called on people to insult others had the objective of provoking people to cause chaos and clashes and infighting.”
“Today no one should call for a movement that uses sectarian labels. We must build on the non-sectarian movement on the sentiments of national belonging and build on it the upcoming phase,” Nasrallah added.
“The Lebanese resistance concerned with confronting the Israeli enemy is a reality that exists without being the least bit influenced by any internal developments,” Nasrallah said, commenting on an incident where resistance fighters targeted an Israeli drone flying over the Lebanese sky on Thursday.
Lebanon was swept up in protests last week over economic stagnation and corruption. The trigger was a raft of new taxes, also targeting WhatsApp and social media calls, designed to tackle the country’s high public debt.
