Lebanon: Beirut Residents Speak Out As Govt Announces Nationwide COVID-19 Shutdown

The streets of Beirut were seen almost empty on Monday after Lebanese authorities announced a nationwide shutdown a day earlier in an effort to prevent the further spread of coronavirus in the country.

Footage shows almost vacant streets, with the occasional person walking around in a mask, along with dozens of closed shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, and banks.

However, residents spoken to on the city streets said more should be done by authorities. “The actions they [the Lebanese government] are taking are not enough in my opinion. More should be done, they must be strict in the way they implement it and God is the one who protects,” said Ali.

“There must be strict measures to get out of this situation so that we can take control [over the spreading of the] virus in a better way,” said Mohamad, another resident.
