Dozens of protesters rallied outside Hamburg University on Wednesday to protest against the return of Alternative for Germany (AfD) founding member Bernd Lucke to his lecturing post.
Footage shows Hamburg University students, locals, and activist groups such as ‘Grandmas against Right-wingers’, carrying banners and signs. Some are even wearing masks with Lucke’s face.
“You have to expect he’d try to make an influence here [at the university] through his specialty ‘Macroeconomics’ and we firmly oppose this, to have the students influenced in this way,” said activist Kerstin.
“We are the post-war generation and some of us had teachers who were the original fascists in the Third Reich and we strongly opposed this [back then]. And I believe this should not be allowed, that the grandchildren generation are taught again by professors who have a similar mindset,” added Doerte.
Bernd Lucke, who took a break from teaching macroeconomics at the Hamburg University to pursue a political career is one of the founding members of Germany’s right wing-party AfD.
