Chile: Santiago Declares State of Emergency As Violent Protests Rock City

The Elisa Correa subway station in Santiago was left completely destroyed on Saturday morning after the violent clashes the previous day.

The ticket offices and the gates of the station, as well as two ATMs located there, were vandalised by the protesters. A burned bus can also be seen outside the station.

A number of metro services were halted across the Chilean capital during the demonstrations as protesters vaulted barriers and damaged ticket machines.

The protests were sparked by a rise in public transport fares which demonstrators see as unacceptable when faced with rising living costs.

The president of Chile, Sebastian Pinera, has declared a state of emergency due to the chaos ongoing in the capital. The president announced this measure on Friday night from the Palacio de la Moneda, in order to control the protests of recent days.
