Algeria: Thousands March at Last Friday Protest Before Presidential Elections

Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Algiers for the 42nd consecutive week of Friday protests, on the last Friday before the upcoming presidential elections on December 12.

Footage shows demonstrators marching while chanting slogans and holding signs reading “We will never bow down” and “No vote with gangsters.”

Protesters were opposing the election, calling for a boycott and a general strike.

The protests, dubbed the ‘Smile Revolution’, began in February after 82-year-old then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced he would be running for a fifth term in office. While he dropped his bid and ultimately resigned in April, the protests continued, demanding a complete political overhaul.
