‘My Own Safety Was Compromised’ – UK Nurse Tells of COVID-19

Neomi Bennett, a nurse working on the frontline of the UK’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, talked about what she has experienced on fighting the coronavirus and how the epidemic has impacted her work, speaking in an interview to RT from London on Wednesday.

Bennett said that due to lack of “central guidance” many hospitals were ill-equipped to provide necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the nurses and other staff.

“It’s not like there’s a set framework that all trusts are following. I think that’s probably what the issue could be. If there was more central guidance and trust followed the same pattern, maybe that would be a way to solve it,” she said.

“I found myself in a position where my own safety was compromised, but I think a lot of healthcare workers, we do tend to work more towards better outcomes for our patients. So it’s putting us in a situation where we’re almost forced to be working unprotected,” the nurse added.

Bennett also said some of the UK public were not listening to the authorities stay-at-home advice, adding that conspiracy theories on social media harm the common effort.

“Obviously at the moment I personally do not believe people are listening. I do work as a nurse currently. I pass several commons and parks on my way to work and I see people having picnics, flying kites. To me it’s like the general public are just not taking it seriously,” she concluded.

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, since the beginning of the epidemic, the UK has registered over 134,000 COVID-19 cases and 18,141 coronavirus-related deaths.
