Lebanese Expats Pay Respects to Beirut Explosion Victims in London

Lebanese expats gathered in London’s Kensington Palace Gardens on Wednesday, to hold a memorial for those who lost their lives in yesterday’s explosion in Beirut.

The mourners sang the national anthem and lit candles in honour of the victims of the blast.

One mourner Flavie said, “I think there’s so much solidarity, and I’ve seen the most immense courage and the most immense compassion and there is something really strong in Lebanese blood.”

Another Ghina said, “Seeing the videos trying to get what’s going on, it’s been really confusing because there’s different theories about it” she added, “we don’t know whether it was kind of targeted, we don’t know whether it was just pure negligence.”

A huge blast rocked the port of Beirut on Tuesday evening. According to the latest data the blast killed more than 135 people and left about 5,000 wounded, while many more remain missing.

The blasts are thought to have been caused by the still unexplained ignition of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material which was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port, according to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab.
