Jam and Jerusalem: The British Democracy Crisis in Two Tweets

There are moments in history that you know marks the official end of something important or monumental. The toppling of Saddam Hussein’s statue in Baghdad, the masses streaming across the Berlin Wall…

For the BBC, however, it is Boris Johnson and his jam.

It could almost be biting parody, yet it is all too serious. With Boris Johnson embroiled in accusations of extreme racism, dodging journalistic scrutiny and attempting to sell the NHS to Donald Trump, the best the BBC can come up with is scones. The sheer hubris of the Beeb Tweeting out such inane drivel at a point of national crisis can only be compared to the state propaganda of a banana republic and will in time come to mark the point that began the downfall of the Corporation.

The Tweet is far more than a simple humanising and twee piece about the Prime Minister’s penchant for scones, it is an open statement that the Corporation has no interest in broadcasting the truth of Boris Johnson’s lies, nor the truth of his racism and misogyny, their only interest is covering for the sitting government.

Following Boris Johnson attempting to challenge the rule of law by proroguing parliament, an action where Conservative party MPs and members openly stated their desire to break the law, the fact that the state broadcaster is openly agitating against the opposition should be of grave concern to all those who believe in democracy.

By covering for Boris Johnson, refusing to inform the electorate of the truth and disseminating what is literally fake news, the BBC itself is now openly challenging democracy and the freedom of the coming election. If the electorate is deliberately kept in the dark by the nation’s largest broadcaster, owned by the state, then how can we say that the coming general election is free and fair? We can’t.

The Failed Estate

The right has wanted to privatise the BBC for years, always being dissuaded by the outrage that would result in the end of dear “Auntie”, that institution that we are told represents the conscience of the nation. The left has defended the BBC against all potential moves toward privatisation, yet in openly supporting Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party the BBC has now lost the left and few will now stand with them when the Tories next come calling.

The Beeb has been accused of being a Conservative institution for many years, with the far-right of course proclaiming they’re too left-wing. The truth, backed by statistics, is that the Corporation lay somewhere between neoliberalism and traditional Conservatism and you have to wonder just how many staff within the BBC itself think their employer should be nationalised given that the BBC has essentially assumed the position of the turkey voting for Christmas.

The number of staff on the BBC payroll with links to the Conservative party is staggering, with the likes of Nick Robinson being a former chairman of the Young Conservatives and Andrew Neil being the chairman of the racist and conservative Spectator magazine. He also enjoys a good meal with Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Earlier this month the journalist Peter Oborne, a former chief political commentator for The Daily Telegraph, revealed that he been told by a source that it was now BBC policy to not expose the lies of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister as it would undermine public trust in politics.

“Senior BBC executives… tell me they personally think it’s wrong to expose lies told by a British prime minister because it undermines trust in British politics… Is that a reason for giving Johnson free reign to make any false claim he wants?”

Peter Oborne

Oborne has previously accused journalists of failing in their duties and regurgitating “propaganda… smears, lies, fake news”, aiming at Laura Kuenssberg and Robert Peston as having “become effectively press spokesmen for Boris Johnson and… Dominic Cummings”

The BBC’s malfeasance is no accident, nor an illusion. There are dozens of examples over recent weeks of a deliberate and willful campaign to hold Boris Johnson to account, a failure in journalism that echoes the propaganda of the Murdoch Press and the likes of The Daily Mail.

The BBC have created their own fake news, strategically editing videos to portray Boris Johnson in a positive light. The Tories, of course, know all about editing videos.

They have packed Question Time with sympathetic voices, despite QT audience members being asked that they don’t apply for ten years after their first appearance.

They have publicly named critics of Boris Johnson and caused threatening and abusive dog piles of those individuals.

They have openly lied about Labour policy.

They have lied to both the Labour Party and SNP about agreeing that Boris Johnson would be interviewed by Andrew Neil, an equal level of coverage to match Neils interview with Corbyn. Instead, Johnson will be interviewed by Laura Kuenssberg.

They have refused to report vitally important negative information about Boris Johnson to the electorate.

They have actively attempted to discourage young people from registering to vote.

Faced with the prospect of a socialist government, a Fourth Estate dominated by those from a wealthy, public school and Oxbridge educated background has crumbled, reverting to their establishment training and falling subserviently into line behind their brethren. What does Andrew Neil know of the struggle that leads many to food banks? What does Laura Kuenssberg know of being unable to afford private health care? What does Nick Robinson know of the week to week struggle to put bread on the family table? It is the shame of socialists and Labour supporters that we ever expected any better.

The Foreign State

The press had a field day when Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis proclaimed that Jeremy Corbyn was not fit to be prime minister over of his handling of the so-called anti-Semitism crisis.

The news gave Laura Kuenssberg the kind of funny feeling she normally reserves for Boris Johnson.

The abundance of coverage granted to Mirvis’ waffle would eclipse both the Muslim Council of Great Britain releasing a statement to condemn the Islamophobia of Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party and Jeremy Corbyn sensationally revealing that Johnson and the Tories were planning to sell the NHS to Donald Trump and the United States.

The abundance of coverage given to the propaganda statement by Mirvis all failed to mention that the Chief Rabbi backs Boris Johnson, has taken anti-Palestinian positions and is incredibly close with the government of Israel.

Here he is, yesterday, with the President of Israel. Job well done Rabbi.

The promotion of the right-wing rhetoric of the Chief Rabbi without question by the mainstream media, including the BBC, again shows that the establishment is wilfully using an invented issue as a black propaganda campaign against Labour while being willing to silence the voice of left-wing Jews to do so.

Indeed, such is the campaign to silence left-wing critics of Israel and the fake news campaign surrounding the so-called antisemitism crisis that when Holly Rigby rightly pointed out that the Chief Rabbi was a bad faith actor who, not only supports Johnson and the far-right Netanyahu but also sought to delegitimatise those who want justice for Palestine”, she was hounded off Twitter by members of the Israeli supporting far-right who accused her of antisemitism and have since tried to get her sacked as a teacher.

Here are Holly’s comments, you can judge the level of “antisemitism” within.

Indeed, such is the level that the Israeli far-right and their anti-Corbyn supporters in the press and parliament have now damaged the term “antisemitism” it seemingly now means anything from mispronouncing Epstein to suggesting that somebody reads A Christmas Carol. Both “issues” of course blew up just as Boris Johnson was coming under intense fire for his dire performance against Corbyn in the live ITV head to head debate, Johnson having defended Prince Andrew over his links to dead paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

There is, of course, no antisemitism crisis at all in the Labour Party, the whole claim being widely debunked as the greatest piece of propaganda seen in British politics since the anti-Labour Zinoviev letter of 1924. Those pushing the conspiracy theory are known to be members of far-right Zionist and Islamophobic groups with links to the likes of the EDL and Tommy Robinson, plus of course those opposed to Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party in the Tories and from Blair era neoliberals who are primarily members of Labour Friends of Israel.

The agenda of this conspiracy is three-fold. Firstly, to ensure that Jeremy Corbyn does not become the British Prime Minister. The damage that a British PM who supported human rights in Palestine and refused to send aid and weapons to the apartheid state would be immense, Israel cannot allow that to happen. Secondly, it is designed to silence left-wing critics of Israel, the state engaging in propaganda and intimidation against activists such as those linked to BDS on a worldwide scale. Thirdly it is designed to deliberately conflate Judaism and Zionism, erasing Jewish identity in place of Zionist nationalism and creating a state that is unable to be criticised without being antisemitic.

Israel is a state in violation of numerous international laws, it is a state that has, since 2000, been responsible for 10,000 Palestinian deaths, 2,500 of them children. It has shown a willingness to promote interference in the political process and spread false propaganda to undermine the leadership of the party.

Here are some of the human rights abuses that have taken place against the Palestinians recently, there are dozens more daily in a program which can only be described as a piecemeal genocide.

In 2017, the landmark Al Jazeera series The Lobby exposed the Israeli regime’s interference in the British political process. Undercover footage showed Shai Masot, senior political officer at the Israeli embassy, plotting to “takedown” the Conservative MP Alan Duncan. The video goes on to show Masot informing Labour Friends of Israel chair Joan Ryan that he has access to “more than 1 million pounds” of Israeli funding to bring sympathetic politicians to Israel for junkets.

The implication of financial rewards and favours for positions sympathetic toward the far-right Israeli government is made quite clear in the documentary as is the extent of the links between Labour Friends of Israel and the Israeli government, other footage showing Labour activists discussing the apartheid state’s role in backing their activities. The fact that LFI is essentially a propaganda exercise for the Israeli government is almost undeniable at this stage and both group and state alike are not only linked to ongoing interference in the British political process but also engaged in the dissemination of propaganda and conspiracy theories in an effort to undermine the democratically elected leader of the opposition.

The Lobby stands as a piece of primary evidence against the so-called “antisemitism crisis”.

A 2017 YouGov poll shows that while 32% of Labour members endorsed an antisemitic statement, 40% of Conservative Party members endorsed the comments and 39% of UKIP members did.
A breakdown of the 2017 YouGov poll shows that antisemitism fell under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn between 2015 and 2017.

While it should go without saying that Jeremy Corbyn is a longstanding anti-racist campaigner and ally of the Jewish people, here’s a handy list of 50 times that Corbyn stood in solidarity with the community. There are, of course, many more.

Jewish Voice for Labour, Jews for Justice for Palestinians, Jewish Socialists’ Group, Jewdas and Independent Jewish Voices have all condemned suggestions that Labour is antisemitic, all stating that the accusations are designed to conflate antisemitism with criticism of Israel and undermine the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

It is difficult to over-state how poorly Britain’s Jews are being served by their self-proclaimed communal leaders. This election is not like any other. The far-right is winning around the world. It might very well be that we are just one economic crisis, one climate shock away from the return of fascism across Europe. This is the real threat to Jewish people.

It is the saddest of ironies that whereas Jews were a principal target of fascism in the 1930s, Britain’s Jewish leadership has now aligned itself against the chief bulwark of anti-fascism. In the past and today, our best defence, our only defence, against the far-right, is a strong left, which promises a positive and inclusive plan for a fairer society. If we want to defeat the far-right and to defeat the causes of the far-right, our only hope is Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party.

Jewish Voice For Labour

Others who’ve backed Corbyn include Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Yanis Varoufakis, Brian Eno, Rob Delaney, Angela Davis, Steve Coogan, Alexei Sayle, Maxine Peake, Roger Waters, Jason Hickel, Francesca Martinez, Lowkey, David Adler, Raoul Martinez, Miriam Margolyes, Massive Attack, Vivienne Westwood, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), John Keane, Michael Mansfield QC, Adjoa Andoh, Mike Leigh, Michael Rosen, Robert Cohen, Mark Ruffalo, Amir Amirani, Mark Rylance, Caryl Churchill, Kate Tempest, Jocelyn Pook, David Graeber (London School of Economics), Des Freedman (Goldsmiths, University of London) and Justin Schlosberg (Birkbeck, University of London). All the names listed signed a letter on November 16th to affirm their backing of Jeremy Corbyn against the campaign.

“We are outraged that Jeremy Corbyn, a life-long committed anti-racist, is being smeared as an anti-semite by people who should know better. Antisemitism is a problem within society and is present within all political parties and movements, including Labour. It must be confronted and rooted out at every turn. No political party or political leader has done more to address this problem than Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party.”

November 16th letter

Prominent Jewish thinkers Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein have spoken publically on the smear campaign.

The fake news conspiracy has forced out good socialists and, of course, allies of Jeremy Corbyn, including most prominently Chris Williamson MP. The plot has seen the suspension or expulsion of dozens of pro-Palestinian, anti-racist and anti-apartheid campaigners including Jackie Walker, journalist Asa Winstanley, Marc Wadsworth and the actor John Graham Davies. There were also been calls for Richard Burgon to resign after he correctly labelled Zionism as an “enemy of peace”. In May, the Orwellian campaign saw Peter Willsman being suspended from the party for highlighting the fact that the “antisemitism” conspiracy theory is being pushed by far-right Israeli extremists and “indirectly” from the Israeli embassy.

Israel has openly admitted using such tactics in their propaganda war against critics.

“Vaknin-Gil Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Strategic Affairs [has] stated ‘I want to create a community of fighters,’… She said she planned to ‘flood the internet’ with Israeli propaganda that would be publicly distanced from the government. Vaknin-Gil conceded that BDS activists’ human rights arguments are so compelling at the grassroots in Europe and the US that ‘over there, unless we will do something, we will lose.'”

The Absolute State

The failure of the fourth estate to hold Boris Johnson to account, coupled with foreign interference has led to a toxic atmosphere against Jeremy Corbyn and Labour, one that has seen the unholy alliance of differing establishment and right-wing groups to stop Corbyn.

It must be understood just how much of a threat Corbyn is to capitalism and neoliberalism around the world.

A Corbyn election victory would be a body blow to the ideology of neoliberalism. Already faced with both peaceful and violent street protests in Lebanon, France, Chile, Iraq, Colombia, Ecuador and many other nations, the mass opposition movement is quickly developing into a worldwide revolt against the establishment, austerity and inequality. This revolt is barely mentioned in the media, despite the coverage they have given to western-backed protests in Iran, Hong Kong and during the Arab spring and Colour revolutions.

While Britain and America’s mass opposition to austerity and inequality has not yet come to violence, the democratic movements behind Corbyn and Sanders are immense. The body blow that would be dealt to neoliberal capitalism by either one turning to socialism would be a mortal wound. In Chile they fight the rising tide with bullets, in Britain and America they fight with fake news, smears and propaganda.

Likewise, the far-right cannot countenance a Corbyn victory. As Steve Bannon continues his thus far failing attempts to unite the European far-right under one banner, a Corbyn victory would be another mortal wound dealt to the neo-fascist dream of turning Europe into another Trump-like MAGA state. A rejection of the racism of Farage and Johnson would send a clear message that it is socialism on the march, not fascism, ensuring the rights and liberties of minority groups throughout the country.

The Conservative party are openly flirting with the far-right, from their dalliance with The Brexit Party to their courting of Donald Trump, Victor Orban, Jair Bolsonaro and Narendra Modi, in their efforts to secure trade deals following Brexit. This Islamophobic alliance has reached the level that activists directly linked Modi’s BJP have vowed to campaign for the Tories during the general election in a campaign derived from a far-right hatred of Muslims and Sikhs.

“We have a team in each constituency which is going round with the Tory candidate leafleting, speaking to people and persuading them to vote Tory. The teams are organised by the BJP and Friends of India Society International.”

Kuldeep Singh Shekhawat, president of Overseas Friends of BJP UK (OFBJPUK)

The campaign by the BJP on British soil is race and nationalist motivated with Shekhawat openly stating the BJP activists intend to try and unseat Tan Dhesi and Preet Gill, Britain’s only two Sikh MPs, both Labour.

“We are working with the Tory candidates in Keith Vaz’s ex seat, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi’s seat, Preet Gill’s seat, Lisa Nandy’s seat, Seema Malhotra’s and Valerie Vaz’s seats. Some of them have signed letters against India”

Kuldeep Singh Shekhawat, president of Overseas Friends of BJP UK (OFBJPUK)

So too has Donald Trump decided to offer an intervention, obviously America having a huge amount of money resting on Boris Johnson winning the coming election and auctioning off the NHS to the highest bidder. Foreign interference aside, Johnson is certainly in “good” company alongside the likes of Bolsonaro, Trump and Orban, being just their kind of racist, misogynist and potential criminal.

Let us remember that Johnson and the Tory government had High Court judgement against them after the Prime Minister’s attempted prorogation of Parliament, the court ruling that such an act was an illegal and unconstitutional attempt to subvert democratic debate. Also, let us remember that Boris Johnson once sanctioned the beating of a journalist.

He has called homosexuals “tank topped bumboys”, black people “picaninnies” with “watermelon smiles”, Muslim women “letterboxes”, said that he was afraid of groups of black men and that young people have “an almost Nigerian interest in money”.

He has branded single mothers as “producing a generation of ill-raised, ignorant, aggressive and illegitimate children” that seek access to housing.

He has claimed that money spent investigating child sex abuse was “spaffed up the wall” and defended Prince Andrew’s links to dead paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Boris Johnson is every much a racist and misogynist as Donald Trump and he’s just as dangerous.

The rule of democracy is breaking down in Britain, led by a Prime Minister willing to break the law to achieve his political goals. Racist and Islamophobic rhetoric, backed by the government and international far-right, is rampant in society and led by the Prime Minister himself. Foreign states are attempting to subvert the will of the British people and unseat legitimately elected members of parliament, while the state-funded broadcaster refuses to abide by their charter and promotes the sitting government, undermining the socialist opposition. Journalist Julian Assange languishes in Belmarsh prison for speaking the truth to power while those responsible for countless deaths through programs of colonial war and crippling austerity are free to walk as free and rich men.

All the while Britain demands that Venezuela and Bolivia hold “free and fair elections”.

Britain is in danger of becoming Donald Trump’s mini-me – a far-right state beholden to capitalism, racism and the interests of the American-Israeli-Saudi international axis. From “taking back our independence” Britain is now in danger of becoming an American colony.

Labour faces insurmountable odds against an establishment quite willing to allow this to transpire so long as they don’t have to pay a little extra tax. Every state institution, every member of the working class, every member of the BAME and LGBT communities are under threat by what is potentially just around the corner. This is truly now the 99% against the 1% and we must unite together before it’s too late to ensure that the only chance we have to stop it is a success.

Labour MUST win the coming general election, for if they do not then Britain faces a very dark future indeed.
